Warlpiri Media Association has been going for over 25 years, and is as strong now as it ever was. Video is still a major part of what we do, both production and local transmission, but we have added the popular PAW radio network launched in 2001, a music recording studio and the capacity to produce web based projects as you can see here.
Warlpiri Media Association is known both nationally and internationally for many reasons: from research done on early satellite transmissions and video production, to the popular award winning Bush Mechanics documentary.
Warlpiri Media Association now trades under the name of PAW Media and Communications. We provid e services to Pintubi, Anmatjere and Warlpiri language areas across the Tanami area of Central Australia.
PAW Media is widely accredited as being the first community organisation to develop and facilitate video production in remote Aboriginal communities. As a result, we have a rare and unique collection of tapes that have national and international significance. It is a collection of videotapes from 25 years of production. We estimate that there are over 1000 tapes in the collection.
The collection consists of WMA News presented by Warlpiri speakers, recorded ceremonies, Yuendumu School ‘Country Visits’, 15 years of Yuendumu Sports Weekends and 13 episodes of the Warlpiri language children’s program ‘Manyu Wana’.
As archive videos are being logged, some community members have sat in on the process. As a result, there is a real sense of community and unity in recognizing the history of PAW Media and Communications productions and the people represented on screen.
