Aboriginal Invention of TV E-mail
Video - History

In 1985 in Yuendumu in Central Australia, Warlpiri Media Association established the first Aboriginal TV station in Australia. Warlpiri people such as Francis Jupurrurla Kelly, Andrew Japaljarri Spencer and Kurt Japanangka Granites developed ground breaking ideas on Aboriginal control of video production and broadcasting which ideas continue to have relevance and importance for the expanding Aboriginal media network in Australia. This video summarises the background to the development of Warpiri Media Association and the cultural principles of production through a video record of the thesis of the American researcher Dr Eric Michaels. Michaels, through an AIAS Fellowship supported and documented the development of Warlpiri Media Association from 1983 to 1986.
